Double Bolt Security: Strong Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) are important

Social media helps us stay in touch with friends and family, share our experiences, and keep up with the latest news. But with this convenience comes the major need for solid security practices. One of the best ways to stay safe online is by using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication (MFA).  Sometimes they may seem tedious but it is better safe than sorry. Once you lose an account, it can be difficult to recover. Let’s dive into why these security techniques are important for our senior friends!

Social media accounts are the most frequent targets for password hacking.

  • Around 29% of people reported their accounts being hacked.

  •  68% of people had to change their password across multiple accounts after being compromised.

  •  42% of people only change their passwords when prompted, not regularly.

  •  35% of people believe their password was hacked because it was weak, and 30% think it was due to reusing the same password.

 Why Are Strong Passwords Important?

A strong password is your first line of defense against hackers. It protects your personal info, like your name, address, and financial details, from unauthorized users. A weak password is like a flimsy lock that's easy to pick, making your social media accounts vulnerable to hacking and identity theft.

How to Create a Strong Password

Creating a strong password is simple. It should be at least 12 characters long and include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Make it unique and not linked to your personal information. Avoid using common words or easily guessed details like your name, birth date, or pet’s name.

Here are a few good password examples:

- F!iSc*RnMx$uR^xGC*63

- SunnyBroomAirplaneHorseGraduation

- TUQ*ir9MJ#BJi$!6^QNz

- JoylesslyDecodeDeliriumGoatskin

- ms5nMF&wYLXRTLM3NAeP

How to Update Your Passwords

It’s a good idea to update your passwords regularly, as well as changing the locks on your door occasionally to keep things safe and secure. To update your password, log in to your account, go to the settings or security section, and follow the prompts to change it. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is an extra lock on the door.

MFA adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring more than one verification form. This can be something you know (like a password), something you have (like a phone), or something you are (like a fingerprint). Many platforms offer two-factor authentication, which sends a code to your phone after you enter your password.

It makes a BIG difference: MFA blocks 99.9% of modern automated cyberattacks.

Even if someone cracks your password, they can’t access your account without the second verification form. We are leaving them high and dry!

Doubling up with strong passwords AND enabling MFA makes your account five-star secured. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the benefits of social media while keeping your information private and safe.
